Encrypting Files
To encrypt one or more files:

  1. Select one or more unencrypted files. Right-click a selected file and choose Encrypt File(s) from the ShellToys XP menu.

  2. A dialog will appear prompting you to choose a private key. Type (or paste) a key of up to 56 characters, then type it again to confirm. This key is case-sensitive. Remember that the file cannot be decrypted without this key, so make sure you choose a memorable key! If more than one file is selected, each will be encrypted using the same key.

  3. If you want to delete the original files, check the Permanently shredà checkbox. Shredding the files prevents them from being retrieved using disk tools, using the same shredding process used in the Shred File toy. (The original files are only removed once encryption has been successfully completed.)

  4. Click OK, and an encrypted copy of each selected file will be created in the same folder as the original with the same filename plus a .ste extension. (If a file with this name already exists, you'll be given the choice of replacing it or canceling.)

Important: There are no 'back doors' built into this encryption method that would allow CFi (or anyone else) to rescue your file if you forget the private key. Consider carefully what key you will use, and how many different keys you will use for different files, before using this tool.
